Bones found on a sandbar in Red River are human, according to Caddo Parish Coroner Dr. Todd Thoma.

An “intact female adult skeleton,” including a skull, have been located, but it’s too early to provide further information, he said.

The Caddo Sheriff’s Office, Caddo Coroner’s Office, and representatives from the LSU FACES lab in Baton Rouge returned to the sandbar today after the Sheriff’s Office and Wildlife and Fisheries found several bones earlier this week. The skull was discovered today.

The skeletal remains will be transported to Baton Rouge for further examination by the FACES team. Among other things, the team can do a facial reconstruction, look for evidence of trauma, and pull DNA, Thoma said.

Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator said the Sheriff’s Office was first alerted over the weekend that a suspicious bone was found on the sandbar about a mile north of Cash Point Landing. The Caddo Sheriff’s Marine Unit located several more bones on Wednesday.

The sandbar is located in the middle of Red River about 30 to 40 yards from the bank but is accessible by walking in shallow water from private property. The bones were located near a tree and other brush on the sandbar.
