Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator was honored Tuesday night with the Spirit of Scouting Award presented by the Boy Scouts of America, Norwela Council.

The presentation was made during the 19th annual Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award Reception held at Ralph and Kacoo’s Restaurant in Bossier City.  The reception salutes special volunteers who have worked diligently to deliver the Boy Scout program to low income, minority, rural, and under-served families.

The Spirit of Scouting Award is presented to a noteworthy individual who has performed exceptional and unusual service to young people in hard-to-reach communities over a long period of time.

For the past 16 years, Sheriff Prator has provided scouting opportunities for boys ages 9-12 by hosting Caddo Sheriff’s Camp at the Kinsey Scout Reservation. Sheriff’s Camp develops leadership skills among campers and encourages involvement in scouting by introducing boys to activities like swimming, archery, marksmanship, and citizenship. There is no cost to attend the camp. Funding is provided through donations raised by the Sheriff.

In addition to Sheriff’s Camp, Sheriff Prator has provided other many opportunities to help protect and educate area youth, including the Youth Firearms Safety Education Camp, First Gun Class for Kids, and CSI Camp.
