Sheriff Steve Prator announced today that applications are being accepted for several youth summer camps and programs offered by the Caddo Sheriff's Office.

Activities include everything from gun safety education and target shooting to CSI sleuthing and pick-up basketball games. Below is a list of camps and activities:

* The annual Youth Summer Recreation Program sponsored by the Caddo Sheriff's Office kicks off May 30, providing safe, summer activities for area youngsters, Prator said.

Children and teens ages 10 to 18 can participate in basketball and table games like checkers, cards and dominoes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Mondays through Thursdays. The activities will take place in the gymnasiums at North Caddo High School on Airport Road in Vivian; Booker T. Washington High School, 2104 Milam Street; Woodlawn High School, 7340 Wyngate Blvd; and Caddo  Middle Career and Technology School, 6310 Clift Avenue.

Each location is supervised by instructors provided by the Caddo School Board. Pre-registration is not required, and there is no fee; however, participants are required to sign in. The program will continue through June 29.

For more information on the summer youth program, call the sheriff's Community Programs Section at 681-0875.

* Sheriff's Safety Town will offer one-day safety programs from June 5 through August 5 for groups wanting to learn more about safety.  Deputies will teach the basics of personal safety, bicycle and motor vehicle safety, fire safety, gun safety and stranger danger. Each program will be tailor fit to the group requesting it.

To organize a group program, call Sheriff’s Safety Town at 698-7233.

* Two sessions of CSI Camp will be held for children ages 11 and 12.  The dates are June 20-21 and July 18-19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants will learn how to detect clues and apply CSI techniques at a mock crime scene. Campers will collect evidence, take crime scene photographs, and learn to lift and analyze fingerprints. At the end of the camp, they will be asked to analyze the clues and solve a crime.

CSI Camp will be held at Sheriff’s Safety Town. To register, call Community Programs at 681-0875.

* The Caddo Sheriff's Youth Firearms Education Camp will be held July 24-28 at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy.  Boys and girls ages 10-13 may select any day during the week to join Caddo deputies on the firing range for supervised firearms safety education and .22 rifle target shooting. In addition, campers will learn internet safety, first aid, Stranger Danger, and survival skills.

Each camp session begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. The camp is free and transportation is available if needed. Applications for the Firearms Camp can be obtained on-line at www.caddosheriff.org or picked up at Sheriff’s Safety Town. Applications should be mailed to the Training Academy at 15639 Highway One South, Shreveport, 71115, to complete the registration process.
