The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Hazardous-Materials Unit was formed in 1982. Team members are trained to respond to any calls involving leaks, spills, fires, explosions, train derailments or any other environmental or life-threatening emergency. Also, all members are certified to handle incidents involving weapons of mass destruction. The haz-mat team works closely with the Office of Homeland Security/Office of Emergency Preparedness and participates in local disaster drills on a regular basis. Members also train with area fire departments and other haz-mat teams so standardized procedures will assure expert handling of any emergency situation.
