At 6:16 a.m. today, Caddo deputies were dispatched to a major traffic accident on the I-49 North overpass at LA Hwy. 173. Caddo Sheriff's Lt. Mike Gray said a car was traveling northbound in the southbound lane when it collided head-on with an 18-wheeler. Both the car and cab of the tractor trailer caught fire and were completely consumed by flames. The trailer, which was empty, was partially burned.
Both occupants of the car were pronounced deceased at the scene. The passenger was ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the truck owned by Target Energy was able to free himself from the cab. He received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to University Health by North Caddo EMS. The fire was extinguished by Caddo Fire Districts 1 and 7.
Gray advised that there is frozen water on the overpass. The overpass remains closed to traffic until the investigation is concluded and the road is deemed safe.
