The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, in commemoration of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) April 8-14, is hosting several events to raise awareness about crime victims’ issues and rights and introduce the community to the important resources and services available.
According to the most recent Bureau of Justice Statistics survey, victims experience more than five million violent crimes and nearly 15 million property victimizations a year.
The Caddo Sheriff’s Office will commemorate the advancement of victims’ rights and highlight issues surrounding victimization by holding a proclamation ceremony at 11 a.m. April 9 at the Caddo Parish Courthouse on Milam Street. A Community Awareness Fair and Safety Fun Day will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at Sheriff’s Safety Town, 8910 Jewella Avenue.
Several agencies will be on hand at the community fair to connect with victims and share information about their services with the public. Those agencies include the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, Shreveport Police Department, Mothers against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Project Celebration, Gingerbread House, Caddo Counseling on Aging, Caddo District Attorney’s Office, U.S Attorney’s Office, and FBI Victims Assistance Office. There will also be an active shooter awareness class for adults; activities for children, including fire and safety presentations and a bounce house; free food and drinks; and door prizes throughout the event.
The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) of the U.S. Department of Justice leads communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. This year’s theme—Expand the Circle: Reach All Victims—highlights how the investment of communities in crime victims expands the opportunity for victims to disclose their victimization, connect with services, and receive the support they need.
“Victims of violence and their families must deal with the emotional, physical, and financial aftermath of crime,” said Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator. “In Caddo Parish, we want victims to know they have a voice and they have support through the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office.”
