Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator announced today that applications are being accepted for the Caddo Sheriff's Youth Firearms Safety Education Camp, which will be held July 15-17 at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy.
Boys and girls ages 10-13 may select any of the three days to join Caddo deputies on the firing range for supervised firearms safety education and .22 rifle target shooting. Each participant is paired with a deputy who provides individual instruction. The camp will also include Air Soft sports, use of the shooting simulator, games, and water activities including slides and a dunk tank where campers can dunk a deputy.
Each camp session begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. The camp is free and transportation is available if needed.
This is the 17th year that Sheriff Prator has offered the camp to Caddo Parish youngsters. As a young boy, Prator attended a similar shooting camp hosted by Sheriff J. Howell Flournoy.
"The response to this camp has always been great, but beyond having a good time, we are teaching some valuable lessons that will keep your children safe," he said. "If you don't have a gun in your home, I guarantee your child is visiting friends or family who have a gun in their home. It's important that they know what to do if they come across one."
Applications for the Firearms Safety Education Camp can be obtained on-line at www.caddosheriff.org under the camps/classes tab or picked up at Sheriff’s Safety Town. Applications should be mailed to the Training Academy at 15639 Highway One South, Shreveport, 71115, to complete the registration process.
