A Caddo Sheriff’s deputy was recognized by his peers as the state’s Deputy Sheriff of the Year during the annual conference of the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association in Baton Rouge today.
Lt. Richard Corbett received the prestigious honor in front of his colleagues at the L'Auberge Hotel. The award is presented each year to a deputy who has shown initiative and imagination in law enforcement and strives to improve the quality of life in their community.
Lt. Corbett is a 23-year deputy with the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office. He currently serves as director of Sheriff’s Safety Town, Louisiana’s only full-time permanent facility dedicated to teaching children’s safety. He has actively written and developed program curriculum, raised funds, and obtained grants that helped protect thousands of children in our community from the dangers associated with gun violence, house fires, traffic accidents, and more.
Lt. Corbett also serves on the Northwest Louisiana Transportation Safety Coalition where he recently developed a statewide program promoting teenage seatbelt safety. He established a Law Enforcement Explorer program for teens and is an ACTIVE participant in several community organizations, including Shreveport Green, Rotary Club of South Shreveport, Kiwanis Club of Southern Hills, and the Southern Hills Business Association.
Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator was in Baton Rouge to attend the presentation and congratulate Lt. Corbett on his award. "I can't think of anyone among all of Louisiana's deputy sheriffs who is more deserving of this award than Richard Corbett," Prator said. "He is hard working and humble, and we are very proud that he represents the Caddo Sheriff's Office."
Mike Ranatza, LSA Executive Director, said the LSA is honored to highlight the meritorious contributions of Louisiana’s professional deputy sheriffs. “They are the heart of our association, and we feel it’s important that we never lose sight of that,” he said.
The Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association is composed of Louisiana’s 64 sheriffs and nearly 14,000 deputy sheriffs. The Louisiana Sheriffs’ Association accepts nominations each year from the state’s sheriffs and the winners are selected by the Sheriffs’ Awards Committee.
