Annual state review gives high marks to Caddo Correctional Center

An on-site inspection of the Caddo Correctional Center conducted by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections gives high praise to the parish jail and the deputies who run the facility.

In a report issued this week, the monitors who conducted the Basic Jail Guidelines review, said “The administration has clearly made a commitment to provide a correctional environment that promotes professionalism and accountability for their employees and offenders alike.”

Sheriff Steve Prator was happy with the report. “I’m very proud of this outside review,” he said. “It confirms we are professionals providing an environment that balances accountability and rehabilitation.”

Two monitors visited the jail in early August and observed deputies and inmates in the corrections environment. The capacity of CCC is 1,500. There were 1,282 inmates housed on the day of the visit.

CCC was compliant in all 30 areas reviewed by the monitors. Those areas included safety and sanitation, offender population management, care and clinical services, programs and services, and weapons training for deputies.

“Initial as well as ongoing training of deputies is exceptional,” the report stated. “The staff has a very good work ethic, … displayed a very professional attitude … and were very satisfied with their job and working conditions.”

Regarding inmates, the inspection revealed no negative comments about confinement, housing, or food. The report noted that “offenders are afforded good opportunities to better themselves through educational and self-help programs.”

The report recommended continued annual monitoring visit
