Sheriff Steve Prator announced today that applications are being accepted for three summer camps for kids offered by the Caddo Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's Safety Town will offer one-day mini-camps from June 2 through July 24 for children interested in learning more about safety. Deputies will teach the basics of personal safety, bicycle and motor vehicle safety, fire safety, internet safety, animal safety, gun safety and stranger danger. Older children will also learn about crime scene investigations.
Shortened sessions from either 9-11 a.m. or 12-2 p.m. will be held on Mondays for students entering first and second grade. Incoming third and fourth graders will attend on Tuesdays; fifth and sixth graders on Wednesdays; and seventh and eighth graders on Thursdays. Times for third through eighth graders are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Children must bring their own lunch and dress for outside weather, including wearing closed-toe shoes. There is no charge for the camp but pre-registration is required. To register, call Community Programs at 681-0875.
Three sessions of CSI Camp will be held for children ages 11 and 12. The dates are June 17-19, July 15-17, and July 29-31, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Participants will learn how to detect clues and apply CSI techniques at a mock crime scene. Campers will collect evidence, take crime scene photographs, make shoe impressions, and learn to lift and analyze fingerprints. At the end of the camp, they will be asked to analyze the clues and solve a crime.

The Caddo Sheriff's Youth Firearms Education Camp will be held June 16-20 at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy. Boys and girls ages 10-14 may select any day during the week to join Caddo deputies on the firing range for supervised firearms safety education and .22 rifle target shooting. In addition, campers will learn rural and urban survival skills, water safety, and hands-on defensive techniques to protect against stranger abduction.
Each camp session begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. The camp is free and transportation is available if needed. Applications for the Firearms Camp can be obtained on-line at www.caddosheriff.org or picked up at any Caddo Sheriff’s Office substation, Caddo Correctional Center, or Sheriff’s Safety Town. Applications should be mailed to the Training Academy at 15639 Highway One South, Shreveport, 71115, to complete the registration process.
