Caddo Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness monitoring upcoming weather event

The Caddo Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness is continuing to monitor weather activity for the possibility of more flooding in the coming days, said Sheriff Steve Prator.

Deputies with the Caddo OHSEP are receiving daily updates from the National Weather Service and working with city, parish, and federal agencies to make sure all area needs are met.  Regular briefings are being held with the US Geological Survey, Caddo Parish Public Works, City of Shreveport Engineer, Caddo Levee Board, Red Cross, and Salvation Army, among others.

Experts say there could be flash flooding during the holiday weekend which could result in high water on streets that usually flood or have already experienced high water.

“As little as six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult, and just 12 inches of rushing water can carry away a small car,” Prator said. Children and adults should stay clear of culverts, drainage ditches, and other areas with high water.

Areas that have experienced standing water and high water levels, especially along Red River, may also have snakes and alligators near the banks.  It is not wise to wade in this water.

Prator said the weather event may change daily so it is important to keep updated with local weather forecasts.  Keep batteries in weather radios fresh, cell phones charged, fuel tanks full and other related emergency preparedness supplies nearby.  A complete list of emergency preparedness tips can be found at www.getagameplan.org.
