The projected crest of the Red River in Caddo Parish has been revised to 36.5 causing more residents to evacuate as water finds its way into their homes.

During today’s briefing at the Caddo Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, city, parish, and state officials met to discuss overnight developments and plan for the weekend. The river is now expected to crest on Sunday afternoon and remain at 36.5 feet for up to two additional days before beginning to drop off.

Officials are currently monitoring 44 homes in north and southeast Shreveport.  Shreveport Police, Fire and Caddo deputies are continuing to go door-to-door in those areas to encourage residents to evacuate. Fewer than 10 homes have evacuated, but officials say there could be many more who have left and not notified public safety officials.

The Caddo Levee Board is reporting all levees to be in good condition and says the levees should not be affected by the newest crest prediction. There is no water topping over any of the levees in Caddo Parish.

The City of Shreveport is working with its partners to protect key city infrastructure including the Amiss Water Plant, and the Lucas and North Regional Waste Water Treatment Plants. City assets along the riverfront, such as Sci-Port and Riverview Theater, are being sandbagged for their protection.

City officials advise if you have an event this weekend at any of the riverfront facilities please call ahead and confirm as many events are being rescheduled.

Caddo Correctional Center inmates are being used to stack sandbags to protect the Stoner Lift Station. CCC inmates are also being used to prepare sandbags for citizens at facilities on Monty Street and Greenwood Road. The Sheriff’s Office will be requesting 150 inmates from David Wade Correctional Center in Homer to assist with further sandbagging efforts of city and parish infrastructure.

The Northwest Louisiana Red Cross opened a shelter in Caddo Parish last night at the LSU-S Red River Radio Building, 8675 Youree Drive.  A second shelter is open at Southern University-Shreveport in the gymnasium at 3052 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. The Red Cross is partnering with the Salvation Army to provide meals for shelter residents.

Anyone evacuating to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each member of the family including:

  • Prescriptions and emergency medications;
  • Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements;
  • Identification to show residence is in affected area and important personal documents;
  • Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items;
  • Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys;
  • Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled;
