June 25, 2015, Red River Briefing

Caddo emergency responders attended a morning briefing in preparation for the new Red River crest projected for next week.

The National Weather Service still expects a 32.5 foot crest in Shreveport around July 1, according to their report today.

Robert Jump, deputy director of the Caddo Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Response, said FEMA teams have completed their initial damage assessment of public infrastructure and facility losses and will submit a preliminary figure of $8.2 million in preparedness, response and recovery costs for Shreveport and Caddo Parish. That number will be added to other state damages to determine if a Presidential Disaster Declaration will be awarded to the area. It does not include individual property losses, which is covered under a separate program.

  • A VOAD Multi-Resource Center will open this weekend to assist residents whose homes were damaged or impacted by flooding. Trained caseworkers will be available to help evaluate immediate recovery needs, navigate paperwork, and locate assistance for specific disaster-caused needs, such as help with food, clothing, cleaning supplies, and basic needs. The Resource Center will be open from 3-7 p.m., Friday, June 26, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, June 27, at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, 1666 Alston Street.
  • The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, will offer free tetanus shots from 3-7 p.m. Friday at the Resource Center to Caddo citizens who have been exposed to flood waters.
  • Monetary contributions are being accepted by the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana to help cover expenses and replenish supplies used to assist residents affected by the flood. The Food Bank is also accepting perishable and non-perishable food donations. For more information on donating, contact the Salvation Army at 212-0463, the Red Cross at 865-9545, or the Food Bank at 675-2400.
  • Sandbags are still available at Caddo Parish Public Works, 1701 Monty Street, and Shreveport Streets and Drainage, 3825 Mansfield Road. Both locations will keep sandbags available for pick up throughout the weekend.
