Warrant scofflaws arrested during "Operation Zero Tolerance"

Caddo Sheriff’s deputies cleared 80 outstanding warrants this week during a roundup called “Operation Zero Tolerance,” according to Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator.

The roundup began Monday and continued throughout the week while deputies searched Shreveport and Caddo Parish neighborhoods for suspects in crimes ranging from violent offenses to traffic infractions.  They were assisted by Shreveport City deputy marshals and the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force.

Prator said the operation had a dual purpose: to suppress crime through the execution of felony warrants and to collect on fines owed to the Sheriff's Office. "This takes a tremendous amount of coordination between agencies and manpower to conduct such an extensive operation," Prator said, "but wanted criminals should know that we will never stop looking for you. Sooner or later, we will be at your door."

Deputies concentrated on 300 outstanding bench and arrests warrants dating back two years, said Sgt. Eddie Thomas, of the CPSO Warrants Division. Of those, 175 were served and 80 were closed with an arrest or payment of a fine. 

Charges on the warrants ranged from disturbing the peace to second-degree murder. Offenders wanted for non-payment of traffic tickets were allowed to pay their fines and were released. Thomas said an estimate of the fines and probation fees collected is $25,140, but more specific numbers will be available next week. He added that some felony offenders who were arrested posted bond, but the majority were booked and remain at Caddo Correctional Center.

In addition to executing outstanding warrants, hitting the streets and being visible in the community also led to more tips being generated, Thomas said. “We’ve received strong support from the public who really wanted the bad people off the streets. The Caddo Sheriff’s Office Warrants Office is a professional group, and the citizens return that by calling us when they know someone is wanted on a warrant. This wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation of the public.”
