Caddo sheriff announces recipient of college scholarship

Taylor Prothro of Caddo Parish is the recipient of an academic scholarship from the Louisiana Sheriffs' Scholarship Program, Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator announced today.

Prothro is a senior at C.E. Byrd High School. She plans to use the $500 scholarship to study pre-medicine at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Prothro’s parents are Craig and Marilyn Prothro of Shreveport.

Prothro has a 4.6 grade point average and received a 30 on her ACT. At Byrd, she is active in drama, Quill and Scroll, the Astra Club and yearbook. She also is a member of the Byrd Student Advisory Committee and National Honor Society, and is a member of the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank Youth Board, Jason Foundation Suicide Prevention Youth Board, and the Caddo Parish Schools Child Nutrition Board.

Sheriffs’ scholarships are made possible by the Louisiana Sheriffs’ Honorary Membership Program (LSHMP). Louisiana sheriffs provide scholarships to graduating high school students from each parish where the sheriff is an affiliate of the program. Scholarships will be awarded in 60 parishes throughout the state.

Qualities such as academic achievement, leadership and character are considered in making selections of Sheriffs’ scholarship recipients. The only limitations are that applicants be permanent residents of Louisiana and that applicants enroll as full-time, undergraduate students in state. Caddo Parish scholarships are selected by representatives of LSUS, Southern University-Shreveport, Bossier Parish Community College, and Centenary College.
