Caddo Sheriff's Deputy Tyler Lummus was honored April 4 as Hero of the Year by the 40 & 8 Voiture Locale 137 in Shreveport, said Sheriff Jay Long.

The organization also announced Lummus was chosen by its state organization as the Louisiana Hero of the Year and has been nominated by the group for its national award. He will receive the state award at the Grande Promenade in Alexandria in July.

Lummus was honored for his actions on July 4, 2023, when he assisted Shreveport Police following a mass shooting on Jones Mabry Road, outside his patrolling area. Once he arrived on scene, he began rendering aid to the victims. Lummus first helped a female gunshot victim who was lying in a ditch by applying direct pressure to her wound until fire personnel arrived. Lummus then located another female gunshot victim and used his department-issued emergency first aid kit to stop her bleeding. Once again, Lummus treated the victim until he was relieved by fire personnel.

In the following months, Lummus responded to yet another shooting situation where he was attempting to safely rescue a woman and child when they came under gunfire from a neighbor who had just killed a family member. Lummus and other deputies returned fire, stopping the threat.

Lummus was honored by the members of the 40 & 8 for his bravery and willingness to put himself in harm's way to defend and save the lives of Caddo Parish citizens.
