Local agencies to pay tribute to fallen officers during Police Week

A ceremony honoring fallen law enforcement officers will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at the Police and Firefighters Memorial in Barnwell Gardens, south of the Shreveport Aquarium on Clyde Fant Parkway. The public is invited to attend.

The annual Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony will pay tribute to local officers and deputies killed in the line of duty since 1894. The Caddo, Bossier, and Desoto sheriff's offices; Shreveport, Bossier City, and Greenwood police departments; Shreveport City Marshal; Louisiana State Police; and Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will participate in the ceremony.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 of each year as Peace Officers' Memorial Day in honor of the federal, state, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. The calendar week of May 15 is National Police Week in recognition of the service given by the men and women in law enforcement. The local memorial ceremony is held in conjunction with Police Week.
