Man arrested for home improvement fraud

Caddo Sheriff's detectives have arrested a Bethany man for home improvement fraud, said Sheriff Steve Prator.

David Capito, 51, was booked into Caddo Correctional Center on the felony charge following an investigation by Detective Bobby Herring.

Capito, who had done work for the victim before, made an unsolicited visit to the victim's residence in February and checked his air conditioner unit while there. Capito told the victim that his compressor was not working. Capito inspected the compressor using pliers, and after completing the inspection, he said one of the terminals was burned off. Capito tried to sell the victim a new unit for $3,000 and pretended to make several phone calls inquiring about AC units while in the presence of the victim. The victim refused the new AC unit, and told Capito he would get back in touch with him, but instead, the victim contacted the Sheriff's Office.

Two independent AC professionals were consulted during Herring's investigation. Both inspected the damaged compressor and said the terminal was intentionally broken off with pliers or wire cutters. The AC unit was eventually replaced for $1,600.
