Joint investigation leads to suspect in burglary, car theft

Two Waskom teens were arrested on Monday for being in possession of a stolen car and burglarizing an elderly Waskom woman's residence while she slept.

Dustin Martin, 18, of Waskom, and a 15-year-old juvenile male, also of Waskom, were charged with being in possession of a stolen vehicle after they were arrested in Caddo Parish. Charges for burglary and unauthorized use of a moveable are also pending in Waskom on both subjects. Martin was also cited for failing to report a crash.

The arrests were the result of a combined effort between the Caddo Sheriff's Office, Mooringsport Police Department, and the Waskom Police Department.

Caddo deputies were dispatched to assist Mooringsport Police with a stolen vehicle they had recovered on LA 169. Mooringsport officers had received a call about two teenagers knocking on the door of a Mooringsport residence asking for a gas can. A short time later, the officer located a silver 2008 Cadillac on the edge of LA 169 on the south side of town. A check of the vehicle determined it was stolen out of Waskom earlier that morning.

After speaking with Waskom Police, it was learned the car thieves had broken into an 87-year-old woman's house while she slept and took items including the car keys and money. They also stole the car from the garage.

Caddo deputies, the Mooringsport police chief, and local constable circulated the area for the suspects. After a telephone tip, the suspects were located at a residence on the Old Mooringsport Latex Road. They were taken into custody without incident.

Martin was booked into the Caddo Correctional Center and the 15 year old was taken to the Caddo Juvenile Detention Center.
