Sheriff Steve Prator announced today that applications are being accepted for three summer camps for kids offered by the Caddo Sheriff's Office.

Caddo Sheriff's Camp, an overnight camp for boys ages 10-13, will be held at Garland Scout Ranch June 12-15 in conjunction with the Boy Scouts of America, Norwela Council. The camp recognizes at-risk boys from Caddo Parish for good behavior and academic achievements and introduces them to the scouting program.

The purpose of the camp is to develop leadership skills and encourage involvement in scouting by introducing campers to outdoor activities like swimming, archery, marksmanship, and crafts.

Transportation to and from camp is provided, and funding is made possible through citizen donations. Applications can be obtained from the Boy Scout office by calling 868-2774.

Sheriff's Safety Town will offer one-day mini-camps from June 1 until July 28 for children interested in learning more about safety.Deputies will teach the basics of personal safety, bicycle and motor vehicle safety, fire safety, internet safety, animal safety, gun safety and stranger danger. Older children will also learn about crime scene investigations.

Shortened sessions from either 9-11 a.m. or 12-2 p.m. will be held on Mondays for students entering first and second grade. Incoming third and fourth graders will attend on Tuesdays; fifth and sixth graders on Wednesdays; and seventh and eighth graders on Thursdays. Times for older students are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children must bring their own lunch and dress for outside weather, including wearing closed-toe shoes.

The Caddo Sheriff's Youth Firearms Education Camp will be held July 25-29 at the Sheriff's Regional Training Academy.Boys and girls ages 10-14 may select any day during the week to join Caddo deputies on the firing range for supervised firearms safety education and .22 rifle target shooting. In addition, campers will learn rural and urban survival skills, water safety, and hands-on defensive techniques to protect against stranger abduction.

Each camp session begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. The Academy is located at 15639 Highway One South. The camp is free and transportation is available if needed.
