Caddo deputy to receive state award

Caddo Sheriff's Cpl. Richard Porter will be in Lafayette on Sunday to receive the Louisiana 40 and 8 Law Officer of the Year award for his efforts to prevent drunk driving, said Sheriff Steve Prator.

Porter was unanimously chosen from nominees submitted by 40 and organizations across Louisiana. He will be honored during the Grande Promenade at 9 a.m., July 10, at the Holiday Inn Lafayette on NE Evangeline Thruway.

Porter is a 13-year veteran of the Caddo Sheriff's Office and serves as a patrol deputy in south Caddo Parish. He has been nationally recognized as an instructor in DWI enforcement techniques and has trained hundreds of Standard Field Sobriety Test instructors and thousands of police officers from all over the country in DWI enforcement and report writing. He also serves as an instructor on DWI enforcement at the Caddo Sheriff's Regional Training Academy.

Porter developed and taught courses in “Crash Investigation”, “Crash Report”, “Crimes In Progress”, “Directing Traffic”, “Hit & Run”, “Issuing Citations”, “Methods Of Patrol”, “Observation & Perception”, “DWI”, “Traffic Laws”, and “Violent Crimes”. He also developed a course to warn teenagers of the dangers of "Alcohol and Drug Abuse."

In addition to his expertise in DWI enforcement, Porter assists the Caddo Sheriff's Fatality Reconstruction Unit in accident investigations.
