SUMMARY:
The Security Deputy is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of a correctional facility. This role involves supervising inmates, conducting security checks, and responding to emergencies. The Security Deputy also assists with administrative tasks, inmate intake and release, and supports rehabilitation programs to aid inmate reintegration. The position requires strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with inmates, staff, and external agencies.
REPORTING: Security Lieutenant
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Inmate Supervision:
- Monitor inmate behavior, ensuring compliance with facility rules and addressing disturbances or conflicts.
- Maintain order and discipline within the facility, applying de-escalation techniques or force when necessary.
Security Patrols:
- Conduct regular inspections and security checks of cells, common areas, and perimeter to prevent contraband, escapes, or other security breaches.
- Report any irregularities or potential security risks.
Inmate Processing:
- Assist with inmate intake and release procedures, including searching, fingerprinting, photographing, and maintaining accurate records of personal property.
Emergency Response:
- Respond to emergencies such as fights, medical incidents, or fires, providing first aid and ensuring the safety of all individuals.
- Use de-escalation techniques and physical force when necessary to manage volatile situations.
Administrative Duties:
- Maintain detailed reports on inmate behavior, incidents, and daily activities.
- Ensure compliance with legal and procedural requirements, documenting any breaches of policy or incidents requiring intervention.
Rehabilitation Support:
- Supervise inmate participation in work assignments, educational programs, and counseling sessions.
- Assist with the coordination of rehabilitation programs aimed at inmate reintegration and personal development.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with law enforcement agencies, mental health professionals, and other corrections staff to ensure the security and well-being of inmates and staff.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues to address security concerns and ensure the smooth operation of the facility.

The Security Deputy works within a secure correctional facility, performing duties in close contact with inmates and staff. The position requires adherence to strict security protocols and involves exposure to potentially stressful or dangerous situations. Working hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the facility’s needs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in law enforcement, corrections, or security preferred.
- Must complete all required training and certification programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following are the minimum qualifications required for this position.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and use sound judgment in decision-making.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work up to 12 hours a day and seven days a week.
- Must pass a Criminal Background Check, Physical Examination, and Drug Urinalysis testing.
