Caddo Parish Sheriff's deputies will begin extra speed enforcement as part of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission's "Summer Heat" initiative. The initiative runs from Friday, July 11, through Saturday, August 16.

Deputies working extra duty will be monitoring parish and state roadways, said Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator. Their efforts will be paid for by a grant from the LHSC.

Excessive speed is a factor in about 30 percent of collisions that result in death, according to officials. Just five miles per hour over the posted speed limit can significantly increase the distance it takes to safely stop a vehicle.
