Caddo Sheriff's deputes were called to a hazardous materials spill around 10:30 a.m. today near Rebel Road in Vivian.
Sheriff's Sgt. John Briery said vandals caused about 70 barrels of oil to spill into a creek from a nearby tank. Briery said a valve to a salt water tank was closed off causing the salt water to back up into an oil storage tank, which then overflowed. Officials tested water in the creek until they arrived at a location where they got an "all clear." That's where they closed off part of the creek and installed an overflow culvert to help with the problem. A private company was then called in to clean up the spill.
Briery said the tanks, belonging to Alice Ma Oil and Gas Productions, were checked last night and all was fine. When the company checked them again this morning, the spill and the vandalism were discovered.
In addition to the Caddo Sheriff's Office, the DEQ and Fire District also responded and assisted with the call.
