Caddo Sheriff offers important safety information before Halloween

Before trick-or-treating this season, Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator advises parents to do their homework and know whose door you’re knocking on.

“Not everyone has good intentions,” Prator said. “It’s important to know who your neighbors are and be aware if there are people out there who could be a danger.”

Prator said at Halloween – or any time during the year – Caddo Parish residents can see if convicted sex offenders live in their area by signing up for free email alerts at caddosheriff.org. Click on the sex offender registry button at the bottom of the page and use the mapping and address features to see where offenders live. Then register to receive future alerts when an offender moves into your neighborhood. The information is managed by OffenderWatch, which partners with law enforcement across the country to manage sex offender registries.

“The community notification tool provides you with the knowledge to protect yourself and your family,” Prator said. “If you are trick-or-treating in a friend’s neighborhood, register their address so you know which houses to avoid.”

To have a safe Halloween, Prator also advises parents:

  • Never allow your kids to trick or treat alone;
  • Only allow your kids to trick or treat at houses you approve; and
  • Don’t let your kids enter homes without you.
