Caddo Sheriff's Office Urges Pet Owners to Take Precautions During Winter Weather

As winter weather impacts our area, Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn Sr. reminds residents to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe from cold temperatures and hazardous conditions.

Prolonged exposure to cold weather can be dangerous—and even life-threatening—for pets. The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office urges pet owners to bring their animals indoors during freezing temperatures. If pets must stay outside, they should have access to a warm, dry shelter that is elevated off the ground and protected from wind, rain, and snow.

Pets should always have access to unfrozen drinking water and sufficient food to help maintain their body heat. Owners are encouraged to check water bowls frequently to prevent freezing and to provide extra bedding, such as straw or blankets, to help insulate outdoor shelters.

Additionally, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office reminds residents that pets can become disoriented during severe weather. Ensure pets are properly identified with collars, tags, or microchips in case they become separated from their owners.

"Pets depend on us for their safety," said Sheriff Whitehorn. "Taking a few extra steps during winter weather can make a significant difference in protecting their health and well-being."
