Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Shares Home Safety Tips Ahead of Winter Weather
As winter weather is expected to affect the area, the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office is urging residents to take precautions now to protect their homes and families.
Cold temperatures, ice, and potential power outages can create dangerous conditions if residents are unprepared. CPSO recommends the following safety tips during winter weather events:
1. **Prevent Fires and Carbon Monoxide Poisoning**: Use space heaters safely by keeping them at least three feet away from flammable materials, and never leave them unattended. Do not use ovens, grills, or generators indoors. Ensure that carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are working properly.
2. **Prepare for Power Outages**: Keep flashlights, batteries, and a fully charged phone on hand. If possible, avoid using candles, and never operate generators inside the home or garage.
3. **Protect Pipes**: Insulate exposed pipes and allow faucets to drip slightly during freezing temperatures to prevent pipes from bursting.
4. **Secure Your Home**: Lock doors and windows, especially if you must leave your residence. Well-lit homes are less likely to be targeted for criminal activity during emergencies.
5. **Check on Vulnerable Neighbors**: Elderly residents, individuals with medical conditions, and those living alone may need assistance during extreme weather.
Residents are encouraged to avoid travel on icy roads unless absolutely necessary, and to monitor local weather reports and official updates.
"The safety of our community is our top priority," said Sheriff [Name]. "Taking a few simple steps now can help prevent emergencies and keep families safe during severe winter weather."
In emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergency assistance, residents may contact our non-emergency number at 318-675-2170. For up-to-date information, download Caddo Ready at caddoready.org.
