Caddo Sheriff Warns Public of Gift Card Email Scam Impersonating Sheriff Whitehorn
The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an ongoing email scam in which scammers are impersonating Sheriff Henry Whitehorn to steal money from unsuspecting victims.
Several individuals have reported receiving emails that appear to come from Sheriff Whitehorn, asking if their “schedule is open this morning.” If the recipient responds or clicks a link included in the message, they are instructed to purchase gift cards and provide the card numbers to the scammer.
The Sheriff’s Office wants the public to know that Sheriff Whitehorn, as well as members of the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, will never request gift cards, money transfers, or financial information through email, text messages, or social media.
Residents are urged to exercise caution when receiving unexpected electronic communications, even if the message appears to come from a trusted source. Scammers often spoof email addresses and names to make their messages seem legitimate.
To protect yourself, please follow these guidelines:
- Do not click on suspicious links or attachments.
- Do not purchase gift cards for anyone claiming to represent law enforcement.
- Verify suspicious communications by contacting the agency directly using official phone numbers.
- Report any scam attempts to local law enforcement.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized by this scam is encouraged to contact the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office at (318) 675-2170.
