Fleet Management
Fleet Management responsibilities are centralized at the Sheriff's Office Operations Center at 4910 North Market. Informally called "4910," the Operations Center is also the staging location for Search and Rescue units, pool vehicles, vehicles impounded in drug seizures and new vehicle assignment.
Pool vehicles are used by deputies in all three Sheriff's Office bureaus -- Administration, Detention and Operations -- when the need arises to use an agency vehicle or while assigned vehicles are being serviced. Maintaining pool vehicles facilitates the uninterrupted continuation of essential services such as patrol, investigations and inmate transportation.
The full-service automotive shop performs all non-warranty vehicle maintenance, as well as new vehicle preparation, older vehicle restoration and vehicle recycling.
About one-third of the vehicle fleet is replaced annually. The new vehicles are equipped as needed and placed into service by Fleet Management. In the past year, the division put 15 new patrol units into service.
To efficiently maintain the agency's 260-vehicle fleet, vehicle technicians continuously upgrade their skills to meet changing technology in engine and structure improvements. Maintenance equipment is upgraded to keep pace with increasing design and electronic technology.
In addition to vehicle management, the division is also responsible for Sheriff's Office buildings and grounds. Structural maintenance and construction are provided for patrol substations in Keithville and Oil City, a satellite station in Vivian, the Operations Center, the Organized Crime Division Center and a new Training Academy. The new training facility is located in buildings at Red River Lock and Dam No. 5 donated to the Sheriff's Office by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
