Traffic Fatalities (all transportation-related deaths)

  1. (Jan. 3 -- 2 p.m.) Bearle Baine Davis, 66, Rt. 5, Box 394BB, Texarkana. U.S. 71 at Little Cannan Missionary B.C. in Belcher. Heart Attack [0104-01]
  2. (Jan. 16 -- 6:45 a.m.) Ruthie L. Jackson, 24, of 3401 Darien, one-car accident on Preston Road 2 mi. east of 789. Lost control, right curve, slick road. [0116-02]
  3. (Jan. 17 -- time unknown) William Ray Boston, 40, Coldwater, Mich. Fell trying to get on or off Southern Pacific train 1/4-mile south of Keithville-Keatchie Rd. near DeSoto Parish line. [0117-03]
  4. (Jan. 28 -- 1 p.m. -- 1 of 2) Mollie Sherred, 57, Rt. 1, Box 158, Fouke, Ark. Southbound on U.S. 71 2 mi. N. of 538, went into a slide, crossed the center line and was hit broadside. Dead at scene. [0128-01]
  5. (Jan. 28 -- 1 p.m. -- 2 of 2) Mary Louise Holden, 69, Rt. 1, Box 228, Sarepta. Front-seat passenger in car driven by husband (Horace B.) northbound on U.S. 71 2 mi. N. of 538. Hit southbound car. [0128-01]
  6. (March 1 -- 7:45 a.m.) Allen Wayne Mayeaux, 56, of 6024 N. 169, Mooringsport. Driver and only occupant of 1984 Ford pickup eastbound on Blanchard LaTex Road 2 mi. W. of Blanchard. Veered off right side of road. Possible heart attack? Long-time downtown barber at 322 Texas. [0301-01&2]
  7. (March 24 -- 4 a.m.) Garrick Rawlings, 22, of 2072 Havana Street. Passenger in car that fled from deputy in 5200 block of S. Lakeshore, lost control, flipped once and ran into concrete-reinforced mail box post. Rawlings died instantly from head trauma. [0324-01]
  8. (April 25 -- early a.m. -- 1 of 3) David William Frith, 23, of 453 Marshall Road, Keatchie. Driver of 1988 Honda Accord. Lost control on La. 169 1.7 miles from DeSoto line. Car hit tree & exploded. All three burned beyond recognition. [0426-02]
  9. (April 25 -- early a.m. -- 2 of 3) Richard Heath Linder, 20, of Keatchie. Passenger in 1988 Honda Accord (w/two others). (see 8. above) [0426-02]
  10. (April 25 -- early a.m. -- 3 of 3) Michael Stiles, 19, of Keatchie. Passenger in 1988 Honda Accord (w/two others). (see 8. above) [0426-02]
  11. (May 16 -- 5:20 p.m. -- 1 of 2) David R. Longman, 27, of 204 Lancashire, Bossier City. Pilot of a 1981 Chinese Built CJ6A (Yak), reported engine failure, tried to land in open field west of Shreveport-Dixie Road, crashed and burned. [0517-02]
  12. (May 16 -- 5:20 p.m. -- 2 of 2) Jeremy Dean Sapp, 23, of 215 Sand Beach, Shreveport. (see 11) [0517-02]
  13. (May 18 -- 5:15 a.m.) Robert Davis, Jr., 16, of 509 S. Pardue Street in Vivian. Passenger in vehicle that went off east side of U.S. 71 about a half mile south of Hosston. Crashed into clump of trees and brush. Died at the scene. [0520-01]
  14. (June 9 -- 12:30 a.m.) Cleopas Benjamin "Bennie" Stephens, 49, of 14066 Gilliam Levy Road in Gilliam. White 1986 Ford Ranger pickup truck went through guard rail of Hosston River Road bridge over Kelly Bayou. Truck found under water in bayou. [0609-02]
  15. (July 28 -- 9:10 p.m.) Nichodemus Patrick, 11, of 5561 Williams Road, Keithville. Walking along Williams Road, stepped out in front of car driven by Janice Simmons, 55, of Keithville. Died at 6:30 a.m. on July 29. [0729-01 & 02]
  16. (Sept. 15 -- 9:10 p.m.) Thomas Janzen, 2, of 8673 Dixie-Blanchard Highway, Blanchard. Mother (Lesia Louise Janzen) was driving pickup truck with Thomas and his teen-age brother in front and four juvenile boys in the back. Thomas was thrown from middle of front seat under passenger dash and died as a result of injuries suffered. Died at LSUMC at 10:20 p.m. Mother charged with DWI and vehicular homicide. [0915-01]
  17. (Oct. 3 -- 10 p.m.) Larry Thomas, 43, of 6875 Rockwell Place, Shreveport. Walking along I-20 westbound lane and walked into path of car driven by 50-year-old Peggy W. Wilkens of Longview. Died instantly. No charges filed [1003-01]
  18. (Oct. 25--8:40p.m.) Mary Anne Perkins, 33, of Vassar Street, Vivian. Was walking on highway and stepped in front of a pick-up driven by Jeffrey Headrick, 33, also of Vivian. Dead at the scene.[1025-01]
  19. (Dec. 22--5:10p.m.) Diane O. Blankenship, 25, of 6518 Grawood Drive in Keithville. Thrown from truck she was driving . Truck slipped off roadway, hit a culvert, and became airborne. The truck then landed in a ditch and rolled four times. Died at 10:00p.m.[1222-03]
  20. (Dec.26--5:00p.m.) Rowena B. Feazel, 73, of 631 Mayo Road. Walking across the street and a truck warned her by honking. Apparently she did not hear the warning and the truck braked and slid on the rainslicked pavement killing the woman.[1226-01]

Homicides

  1. (Jan. 9 -- 2:20 a.m.) Carolyn Harrison, 20, 7710 E. Kings Hwy. Booked husband, Albert Harrison, Jr., 26, for 2nd degree murder. [0109-02]
  2. (Dec. 30 --3:00 p.m.) Russ Rowland, 42, of 4961 Beechwood Hills.Shot to death at a mobile home.Questioning three suspects.[1230-01]

Deaths from other causes as listed

  1. HOUSE FIRE (March 7 -- 8:25 p.m.) Chiniquia Nicole Washington, 6, of 11040 La. Highway 3049, Belcher, died in house fire. Mother and five-year-old sister got out. Caddo Fire Dist. 7. [0307-02]
  2. DROWNING (April 4 -- 5 p.m.) Wayne L. Terry, Jr., 25, of 8301 Crouch Dam Road, Mooringsport, found in Twelve Mile Bayou. Subject of intensive search begun March 29. Reported missing on bayou at 6 p.m. [0404-01]
  3. FOUND IN CROSS BAYOU (May 11 -- 11 a.m.) John Mathis Patterson, 79, of 3815 Greenwood-Mooringsport Road, Mooringsport, missing 5/10. Reported 9 a.m. May 11. Took S&R 20 minutes to find body. Coroner to determine C&M. [0511-01]
  4. INMATE DIED AT LSUMC (May 12 -- 2:30 p.m.) Robert Wayne Hill, 49, of 301 Olive, was inmate at CCC. Taken to LSUMC with medical problems. Coroner to determine C&M. [0513-01]
  5. TEEN ACCIDENTALLY SHOT (June 13 -- shortly before Midnight) Douglas Craig Makowsky, 14, of 3506 Woodleaf Drive, Shreveport. Spending night at a friend's Keith Road area house. Playing with .45 caliber pistol in bedroom. Friend was holding pistol when it fired. Bullet lodged in victim's neck. Died at about 8:30 p.m. June 14 at LSUMC. [0614-01]
  6. HOME ACCIDENT KILLS KEITHVILLE GIRL (June 21 -- 4 p.m.) Christy M. Oliver, 8, of 11005 Mansfield Road (Armstrong Trailer Park). Climbing on glass table in kitchen of trailer. Table collapsed and broke, driving broken edge through her neck. Dead at scene. [0621-01]
  7. HOME ACCIDENT KILLS CADDO RESIDENT
  8. (Oct. 5--8:00 a.m.) Robert E. Ellis, 36, of 2400 block of Friarson Rd.. Vehicle trapped him causing his death. Reason for vehicle movement is unknown. [1005-01]
  9. DROWNING (Oct.8--9:00a.m.) Clyde Herndon, 50, of Ponderosa Trail. Reported missing after a fishing trip on 10-7-96. Body recovered.[1008-02]
  10. HUNTING ACCIDENT (Nov. 30--7:00a.m.) Gerald Remedies, 46, of Rambim Road in Stonewall. Shot in leg and partner went for help. When help returned Remedies was pronounced dead.[1130-01]
