Bossier, Caddo Sheriffs warn against phone solicitations

The Sheriffs of Bossier and Caddo Parishes are warning citizens in both parishes today against falling prey to unauthorized telephone solicitations in the name of the Sheriffs' Offices or Sheriffs' Deputies.

In a statement issued jointly, Bossier Parish Sheriff Larry Deen and Caddo Parish Sheriff Don Hathaway said the only fund-raising effort endorsed by their offices is the Louisiana Sheriff's Honorary Membership Program. That fund-raising, they emphasized, is done exclusively by mail.

Both Sheriffs have received inquiries recently from citizens about telephone solicitors saying they represent various organizations that purportedly benefit sheriffs' offices and deputy sheriffs. A "Louisiana Deputy Sheriffs Association" and an "American Deputy Association" have both been mentioned as the organizations soliciting money by phone. Other callers have told citizens they represent the Sheriffs' Offices.

"None of these organizations are authorized to solicit funds in the name of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office or the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office," Sheriff Hathaway and Sheriff Deen said in their statement. "As a matter of policy, the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office and the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office neither endorse nor condone any telephone solicitations claiming to represent or support sheriffs' deputies or our Sheriff's Offices."

To avoid any confusion, both Sheriffs stated emphatically, there is a simple rule of thumb to follow: "If they call you on the telephone or knock on your door to ask for money, they do not represent our Sheriff's Offices. Period."

Sheriff warns citizens -- again -- of telephone solicitations

Caddo Parish Sheriff Don Hathaway is again warning citizens about unauthorized telephone solicitations claiming or implying an affiliation with the Sheriff's Office or Sheriff's Deputies.

The Sheriff said he was told citizens are being telephoned for contributions by solicitors claiming to represent an "American Deputy Association," supposedly located at 11999 Katy Street in Houston, Texas.

"The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office is not aware of the existence of an 'American Deputy Association,'" Sheriff Hathaway said, "and as a matter of policy neither endorses nor condones any telephone solicitations claiming to represent or support Sheriff's Deputies or the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office."

The Sheriff said last week that unknown persons have been soliciting funds by telephone and saying they represent the Sheriff's Office. "Neither the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office nor the Louisiana Sheriffs' Association is now or ever has solicited funds by telephone," he reiterated. "The public should be aware that anyone soliciting funds by telephone is not in any way connected with or supported by the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office."

Sheriff Hathaway also reminded citizens that the Louisiana Sheriffs' Honorary Membership Program -- the only fund-raising effort endorsed by the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office -- is in the process of mailing membership applications. "Contact by the Louisiana Sheriffs' Honorary Membership Program is made solely by mail," the Sheriff said, "never by telephone."
