Sheriff's Summer Youth Recreation Program

Caddo Parish Sheriff Don Hathaway will open his 16th annual Summer Youth Recreation Program at gymnasiums in seven Caddo Parish schools Monday (June 9).

The program was established to give Caddo Parish children a chance to participate in supervised recreational activities during the summer months. Booker T. Washington High School Coach James Mosley has supervised the program each summer since its inception in 1982. This year's program will run through Aug. 1.

The Sheriff's Summer Youth Recreation Program started 15 years ago at Green Oaks High School. It has grown from that one-gym program in North Shreveport to a seven-school parishwide network of coaches working with neighborhood children.

Working under Mosley's supervision will be 14 Caddo Parish coaches, two of whom coordinate the activities at each school. The 16th edition of the Sheriff's Summer Youth Recreation Program is operating at Green Oaks High School; Bethune, Hollywood, J.S. Clark, Linwood and Vivian Middle Schools, and Oil City Elementary School. Programs are in operation Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"We've come a long way," Sheriff Hathaway said. "We started with one school in 1982. The program has operated in seven schools for the past several years. We believe our Summer Youth Recreation Program is of great benefit to the citizens of Caddo Parish by allowing children to have supervised fun during the summer. At the same time, parents don't have to worry about where their children are during our program hours."

Working with Coach Mosley this summer will be Coaches Helen V. Anderson,
Joe E. Boyd, David Bryant, Linda K. Carroll, Lorene T. Jackson, Mack Jones, Jackie Maiden, Michael Nation, Kenneth Prude, Linda Rainey, Felix Smith, Willie Stevens III, Willie Stringer and Jimmy D. Thomas.
